OpenAI Building Its Own AI Hardware Family

Greg Brockman, President of OpenAI, envisions a profound shift in human-computer interaction, predicting that voice commands will largely replace typing for the "vast majority" of tasks.

During a recent interview with Joanna Stern on her YouTube channel, Brockman confirmed that OpenAI is actively developing a "family of devices" designed to facilitate interaction with its AI models. However, he did not validate ongoing reports about a specific smart speaker rumored for a 2027 launch, nor earlier speculations regarding a wearable device similar to the Humane AI pin. While a precise release date was not provided, Brockman indicated that these innovations could be expected "soon."

When asked about the potential implications of Apple’s lawsuit against OpenAI on the devices being developed in collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive, Brockman asserted, “We are focused on our own development and technology.” He further emphasized the company's independent and innovative approach, adding, “We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets. We are plenty innovative. We are thinking about things from our own angle.”

Irrespective of the final form OpenAI’s new devices take, Brockman reiterated his belief that verbal communication will become the primary mode of interaction, supplanting typing for the "vast majority of what we do." Addressing the practical challenge of widespread voice interaction in open office environments, he mentioned the appearance of soundproof "beak" masks. While not personally using one, Brockman noted that such innovations "really shows you where there’s product market fit," even if they are not considered an optimal long-term solution.

Brockman also underscored OpenAI's commitment to addressing user trust issues with its AI models, particularly concerns surrounding the privacy of ChatGPT’s "temporary chat" mode. To mitigate these anxieties, the company is developing technological solutions aimed at offering "verifiable, auditable guarantees" that ensure only the AI itself can review users’ private data.
