A little over a week ago, reports indicated that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was nearing $70 billion, a figure that positioned the AI lab on par with Anthropic’s reported run rate. However, recent reports suggest the company has informed investors that the actual revenue is approximately $20 billion lower than that estimate.

According to the Financial Times, OpenAI has stated that its current annualized revenue is “approaching $50 billion.” The publication highlights that the previously cited $70 billion figure was derived from internal investor calculations attempting to directly compare OpenAI’s performance with Anthropic’s annualized revenues.

It is important to note that there are discrepancies in how OpenAI and Anthropic calculate annualized revenue. Specifically, Anthropic includes sales generated by its cloud partners, whereas OpenAI does not factor these into its figures.

TechCrunch reached out to OpenAI for a response regarding these figures.

The subject of revenue has become a significant challenge for the company as it seeks to justify the massive investments currently being funneled into its operations. The AI giant secured $122 billion in a single funding round during March. Furthermore, leaked 2025 financial projections from earlier this year indicated that while the company generated roughly $13 billion, its expenditures far exceeded those earnings. Consequently, OpenAI’s initial plans for an IPO, which were rumored to materialize this year, have been postponed until early 2027.
