Visual advertisements will ‘initially’ appear when you generate images using ChatGPT.

OpenAI’s latest ad format will display images of sponsored products and services directly on your screen. The company plans to begin testing these advertisements in the United States later this month, with the ads “initially” appearing when you generate images with ChatGPT, as announced on Monday.

The company first introduced advertisements to ChatGPT in February. Previously, ads only displayed a company’s name, logo, and a link to its product within a “sponsored” section beneath the chat. OpenAI’s new visual format will remain separate from the generated image and will “not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.” Furthermore, these advertisements will not be visible to users who subscribe to ChatGPT’s Plus, Pro, or Enterprise plans.

OpenAI has implemented guardrails to determine when a conversation is “appropriate” for advertisements, aiming to keep them out of “emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts.” The company states it is currently testing visual ads with an “initial group of advertisers” and intends to explore new formats in the future.
