OpenAI has announced its first foray into media ownership with the acquisition of TBPN, also known as the Technology Business Programming Network, a prominent tech industry talk show. This strategic move places the show under the oversight of OpenAI’s chief political operative, Chris Lehane.

Hosted by former tech founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays, TBPN is a daily, three-hour live program broadcast on YouTube and X. Its content spans critical discussions across technology, business, artificial intelligence, and defense sectors.

The show has cultivated a dedicated following within Silicon Valley, establishing itself as a trusted platform where influential industry figures can engage in frank discussions and face scrutiny from their peers. Often likened to a "Sports Center" for the tech world, TBPN regularly features prominent CEOs such as Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, Marc Benioff, and even OpenAI's own Sam Altman, who appear to analyze current events and, at times, break their own news.

TBPN is set to retain its distinct brand identity, with OpenAI committed to supporting its expansion. This scaling assistance comes despite TBPN's already impressive growth, having developed into a substantial platform projected to generate over $30 million this year, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

It is worth noting that OpenAI already operates its own podcast, which offers in-depth conversations with the innovators within the company.

Beyond the show itself, OpenAI intends to leverage the founders' “amazing comms and marketing instincts,” stated Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s head of AGI deployment. Simo emphasized that TBPN will play a crucial role in “bring[ing] AI to the world in a way that helps people understand the full impact of this technology on their daily lives.”

Simo further elaborated, highlighting TBPN's unique capabilities as essential for an unconventional entity like OpenAI, where “the standard communications playbook just doesn’t apply.”

Despite the acquisition, Simo confirmed that TBPN will retain its editorial independence, continuing to “run their programming, choose their guests, and make their own editorial decisions.”

Nevertheless, this acquisition could raise questions. OpenAI, a significant AI research lab nearing an IPO, is purchasing a high-profile talk show that frequently covers both the company and its rivals. Furthermore, post-acquisition, TBPN will fall under OpenAI’s strategy division and report directly to Chris Lehane, known for coining the term ‘vast right-wing conspiracy’ to counter press scrutiny during the Clinton White House era.

Lehane, often characterized as a master of the “political dark arts,” is also recognized for his involvement with Fairshake, a crypto industry super PAC that expended hundreds of millions to undermine anti-crypto candidates in the 2024 election. He joined OpenAI in the same year and has since advised President Trump on significant and contentious policies, including proposals to prevent states from regulating AI and to relax environmental restrictions that could hinder data center development.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who previously declared TBPN his favorite tech show in a social media post, appears confident that the acquisition will not alter the show's commentary, even its potential criticism of OpenAI.

Altman humorously remarked, “I don’t expect them to go any easier on us, am sure I’ll do my part to help enable that with occasional stupid decisions.”

Conversely, TBPN views this acquisition as an opportunity to extend its influence beyond mere commentary.

Jordi Hays articulated TBPN's perspective in a statement, saying, “While we’ve been critical of the industry at times, after getting to know Sam and the OpenAI team, what stood out most was their openness to feedback and commitment to getting this right. Moving from commentary to real impact in how this technology is distributed and understood globally is incredibly important to us.”
