OpenAI revealed on Monday its acquisition of Promptfoo, an AI security startup established in 2024 with the mission to safeguard large language models (LLMs) against online threats.
In a blog post, the leading AI research lab stated that upon the finalization of the deal, Promptfoo's cutting-edge technology will be seamlessly incorporated into OpenAI Frontier, the company's dedicated enterprise platform designed for AI agents.
While the emergence of autonomous AI agents capable of executing digital tasks has sparked considerable enthusiasm regarding potential productivity enhancements, it has concurrently presented malicious actors with new avenues to infiltrate sensitive data or tamper with automated systems. This acquisition distinctly emphasizes the urgency with which leading AI developers are striving to validate the secure deployment of their technologies within essential business functions.
Promptfoo was established by Ian Webster and Michael D’Angelo with the objective of creating robust tools for organizations to assess security vulnerabilities within LLMs, offering both an open-source interface and a comprehensive library. The company proudly reports that its solutions are currently utilized by over 25% of Fortune 500 enterprises.
According to Pitchbook, Promptfoo had secured approximately $23 million in funding since its inception, achieving a valuation of $86 million following its latest funding round in July 2025. OpenAI, however, chose not to disclose the financial terms of the acquisition.
OpenAI's announcement detailed that Promptfoo's technology will empower its agent platform to conduct automated red-teaming exercises, rigorously evaluate agentic workflows for potential security issues, and continuously monitor activities to ensure compliance and mitigate risks. Furthermore, OpenAI expressed its commitment to advancing Promptfoo's existing open-source initiatives.
