During a recent Monday episode of the Lex Fridman podcast, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang ignited considerable discussion by declaring, “I think we’ve achieved AGI.”

AGI, or artificial general intelligence, is a term whose definition remains somewhat ambiguous, yet it has spurred extensive debate among tech executives, industry professionals, and the general public in recent years. It typically signifies an AI that possesses intelligence equivalent to or surpassing human capabilities. In recent months, many tech leaders have actively sought to distance themselves from this often-hyped term, opting instead to coin their own terminology that they consider less sensationalized, more practical, and more precisely defined—though these new phrases often convey essentially the same concept as AGI. Furthermore, the term has been central to critical clauses in high-value contracts, such as those between OpenAI and Microsoft, where substantial financial implications are at stake.

Lex Fridman, the podcast's host, offers his own interpretation of AGI as an AI system capable of "essentially do your job," illustrating this by its ability to launch, expand, and successfully manage a tech company valued at over $1 billion. He then pressed Huang on his timeline for AGI's realization, proposing options like five, 10, 15, or 20 years. Huang's definitive response was, “I think it’s now. I think we’ve achieved AGI.”

Fridman acknowledged, “You’re gonna get a lot of people excited with that statement.” Huang elaborated by citing the viral success of OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent platform. He noted that individuals are leveraging their personal AI agents for a diverse range of applications, adding that he "wouldn’t be surprised if some social thing happened or somebody created a digital influencer … or some social application that, you know, feeds your little Tamagotchi or something like that, and it become out of the blue an instant success.”

However, Huang subsequently appeared to temper his initial assertions. He cautioned, “A lot of people use it for a couple of months and it kind of dies away. Now, the odds of 100,000 of those agents building Nvidia is zero percent.”
