Nvidia is reportedly negotiating to provide billions in debt guarantees for Nscale’s planned Anthropic data center in West Virginia, according to The Information, later corroborated by Bloomberg. Nscale’s IPO filing reveals Anthropic has already signed a $44.6 billion contract for the first building. Essentially, the chipmaker would act as a co-signer for the customer's loans, highlighting the AI industry's efforts to sustain buildouts amidst growing investor apprehension regarding funding volumes.
This proposed arrangement aims to enable Nscale to secure financing for electricity and construction expenses at its West Virginia campus. Under a residual value guarantee structure, Nvidia would intervene if Nscale defaulted on payments, temporarily assume control of the facility, and assist in finding a buyer or new tenant, as detailed by The Information.
Nvidia’s previous financial backing for cloud providers has predominantly covered lease agreements and chip purchases, rather than direct construction funding.
The situation carries significant risk for Nscale, which is pursuing an initial public offering with a valuation cap of up to $35 billion, despite rising concerns over its capacity to execute on ambitious data center projects.
Anthropic’s contract with Nscale encompasses the initial 460-megawatt building at the West Virginia campus, which is anticipated to utilize Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin chips. Furthermore, the entities are exploring a second deal valued around $45 billion for an additional building.
Nscale has encountered hurdles in launching its projects. As of August, the company had deployed approximately 25,000 advanced AI chips, a fraction of the nearly 500,000 it intends to roll out. Its West Virginia site has faced environmental issues, with construction runoff flooding nearby homes multiple times, though the project recently achieved state certification after months of negotiations.
This month, Microsoft withdrew from a planned site in England after grid power access for the project was delayed until the 2030s.
Nvidia has served as a significant financial pillar for the sector by extending roughly $170 billion in investments and credit support to neoclouds and large clients, The Information notes. This includes a $1 billion commitment in convertible financing to Nscale in September.
Neoclouds, which rent out computing power without a traditional cash-rich core business, have faced investor pressure. Shares of CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN each dropped more than 30% last week, CNBC reported.
The proposed guarantee would strengthen Nvidia’s financial connection to Nscale while ensuring a major customer for its hardware. One investor cited by The Information suggested that Anthropic’s involvement likely drives Nvidia’s interest in keeping Nscale’s project on track.
These discussions coincide with Anthropic facing scrutiny regarding its own rapid expansion financing. Although the company filed for an IPO this week, Blackstone has cautioned investors that Anthropic might receive a below-investment-grade credit rating, potentially increasing borrowing costs and prompting a continued reliance on strong partners for debt backing.
