British AI neocloud Nscale is set to acquire software startup Anyscale, aiming to consolidate a larger share of its customers' AI expenditures. Anyscale specializes in enabling companies to efficiently scale their AI workloads across diverse data center and server infrastructures.

The acquisition price for Anyscale is reported to be $1.65 billion, according to Bloomberg, which cited an anonymous source familiar with the transaction.

Anyscale was established by the original developers behind the open-source Project Ray, a distributed programming Python framework. Initially, the company focused on creating a platform designed to execute projects requiring significant computational resources.

Following the widespread attention garnered by GPT-3's launch in 2022, which propelled AI into the mainstream, Anyscale strategically pivoted its offerings. The company began providing specialized scaling services for the serving and training of large language models, alongside solutions for data curation, inferencing, reinforcement learning, and other complex AI tasks. Its platform, fundamentally built upon Ray, delivers robust developer tools, comprehensive observability, and sophisticated orchestration capabilities.

This acquisition of Anyscale aligns perfectly with Nscale's overarching strategy of vertical integration, aimed at comprehensively addressing compute requirements. The neocloud has already established distinct business lines encompassing energy, data centers, and orchestration software. The integration of Anyscale will now expand its portfolio to include advanced workload management and scaling solutions.

"Together, Anyscale and Nscale can co-design the software layer and infrastructure beneath it, something that neither company could do as effectively by optimizing its layer alone," Anyscale stated in an official announcement, highlighting the synergistic potential of the combined entities.

In March of this year, Nscale successfully completed a Series C funding round, securing $2 billion and achieving a valuation of $14.6 billion. Its notable investors include industry giants such as Nvidia, Nokia, Blue Owl, Dell, and the Norwegian industrial conglomerate Aker. The neocloud has actively deployed these substantial funds, along with various debt raises, to forge strategic compute and data center partnerships with prominent companies including Microsoft, British Telecom, and Nordcraft.

Anyscale, which itself achieved a valuation of $1.38 billion during a Series C round in 2022, reported a robust 70% increase in revenue during its most recent quarter when compared to the preceding sequential quarter.

Nscale has confirmed that Anyscale will maintain its distinct branding and continue to serve its current customer base. Furthermore, all approximately 200 employees of the startup will transition to Nscale as part of the acquisition.
