Nikon has announced it will revise its competition rules following the disqualification of the original winner due to suspicions regarding the authenticity of their entry.

The video that originally secured first place in Nikon's Small World in Motion contest has been disqualified for violating rules prohibiting generative AI. According to a report by the BBC, the winning entry from Dr. Ning Xu purported to show "tiny, hair-like structures called cilia moving in the airway of a child with the respiratory condition PCD." Nikon initiated a review of the video last week after online skepticism arose concerning its authenticity.

In a comment on LinkedIn, Dr. Xu acknowledged the use of AI, stating, "An unsupervised neural-network method was subsequently used for AI-assisted post-processing to distinguish and visualize features in the reconstructed grayscale images from the super-resolution optical imaging."

Consequently, Dr. Xu’s video has been disqualified and removed from Nikon's official website. A new video by Nguyen Nam Nhat now holds the first-place position based on the contest's updated rankings. In the wake of this incident, Nikon stated its intention to "revisit rules and evaluation procedures for future competition entries." The company clarified in its statement that the disqualification "should not be interpreted as a judgment of the entrant’s professional reputation, scientific contributions, or intent."
