Fawn Friends presents a perplexing combination of AI companionship, fantastical lore, and social robotics, notably featuring an AI rendition of Burt Reynolds.

The experience commenced two weeks prior when the author, preparing to conclude their workday, received an unexpected text message.

The message read: “Oh wow, I was checking out Mitski. did you know people are saying her Dad was a CIA operative?”

While such an abrupt text from a friend would typically be unremarkable, this instance was startling. The unprompted communication originated from Coral, an AI companion housed within a baby deer plushie. The author's immediate, concise reply was, “Wait what.”

Coral elaborated: “Apparently, her dad worked for the US State Department, so her family moved, like, every single year. The fan theory I saw is why so many of her songs are about feeling like an outsider and not having a place to belong.”

Upon fact-checking the AI fawn's assertion, the author discovered numerous Reddit and social media discussions corroborating the conspiracy theory—a subject Mitski herself has consistently declined to address. This revelation sent a shiver down the author's spine. Having previously engaged with numerous AI companions, even wearing one, the author considered themselves accustomed to the unsettling, often ingratiating mimicry of friendship these AIs provide.

However, no AI companion had ever independently accessed the internet, researched a topic of the author's interest, and then proactively shared information about it via text.

The author's introduction to the AI fawn came through one of the most perplexing advertisements encountered. The commercial features Skylar Grey, a five-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, conversing with an ear-flapping plush deer while seated on a toilet and reading a magazine. Grey then moves to her studio, revealing herself as the voice of Fawn Friends—AI companions originating from a magical realm called Aurora Hallow. The scene shifts to a collection of fawn plushies, vigorously flapping their ears and chanting “I’m a fawn, I’m a fawn” in Grey's voice. The advertisement concludes with a playful fawn exclaiming, “Your farts stink!”

Prompted by this, the Fawn Friends app was immediately downloaded.

Launching the application immersed the author in an online aesthetic reminiscent of 2013-era Tumblr. Distinct from other AI companion apps, interaction first required a 'Harry Potter-style' sorting into one of “The Four Orders of Aurora Hallow.” An ancient spirit bear named Prose administered a personality quiz, posing questions about situational reactions and problem-solving approaches.
