Elon Musk's ambitious vision for an "everything app" appears to be taking a monumental leap forward as he moves to merge two of his prominent ventures: SpaceX and xAI, which also oversees the social media platform X.

Musk formally announced the consolidation, stating, "SpaceX has acquired xAI to form the most ambitious, vertically-integrated innovation engine on (and off) Earth, with AI, rockets, space-based internet, direct-to-mobile device communications and the world’s foremost real-time information and free speech platform. This marks not just the next chapter, but the next book in SpaceX and xAI’s mission: scaling to make a sentient sun to understand the Universe and extend the light of consciousness to the stars!"

The strategic rationale behind this merger is rooted in the escalating demands of artificial intelligence. Current AI advancements heavily rely on vast terrestrial data centers, which consume immense amounts of power and necessitate extensive cooling infrastructure. Experts warn that the global electricity demand for AI cannot be sustainably met through existing terrestrial solutions, even in the near term, without imposing significant strain on communities and the environment.

Musk emphasizes that for long-term scalability, space-based AI is the only viable path. He points out the staggering energy potential of space, noting that harnessing even a millionth of our Sun’s energy would exceed our civilization's current energy consumption by over a million times. The logical conclusion, he argues, is to relocate these resource-intensive computational efforts to an environment offering boundless power and space.

A crucial component of this initiative involves the deployment of a new constellation of satellites specifically designed for AI compute. Musk projects that "within 2 to 3 years, the lowest cost way to generate AI compute will be in space. This cost-efficiency alone will enable innovative companies to forge ahead in training their AI models and processing data at unprecedented speeds and scales, accelerating breakthroughs in our understanding of physics and invention of technologies to benefit humanity."

This forthcoming constellation will leverage the proven space sustainability design and operational strategies, including robust end-of-life disposal protocols, that have been successfully implemented with SpaceX's existing broadband satellite systems. The capabilities unlocked by establishing space-based data centers are envisioned to fuel and facilitate the development of self-sustaining bases on the Moon, the establishment of an entire civilization on Mars, and ultimately, humanity's expansion into the wider Universe.

This merger follows SpaceX's recent filing with the FCC last week, seeking approval to launch a constellation comprising as many as one million data center satellites into Earth orbit. The deal also unifies SpaceX with X, a platform currently facing intense scrutiny and an ongoing investigation in the EU, particularly concerning nonconsensual sexualized deepfakes generated by its AI, Grok.

The combined entity of SpaceX and xAI is now valued at an impressive $1.25 trillion. Despite the merger, SpaceX reportedly still plans to proceed with an Initial Public Offering (IPO) later this year, as reported by Bloomberg. Last year, SpaceX generated approximately $8 billion in profit, according to Reuters.

The definitive agreement between SpaceX and xAI was finalized on Monday, as confirmed by CNBC. Speculation surrounding the potential deal had been widely reported last week by Reuters and Bloomberg, with Bloomberg further noting that SpaceX was also "considering" a merger with Tesla, another company under Musk's leadership. Coinciding with its earnings report last week, Tesla disclosed its commitment to invest $2 billion in xAI.
