Mistral AI, the French artificial intelligence laboratory, is reportedly engaged in preliminary discussions to secure approximately €3 billion ($3.5 billion) in new funding. This information was disclosed by Bloomberg on Friday, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
Should this funding round materialize, it would reportedly elevate the company's valuation to around €20 billion (approximately $23.15 billion). This figure represents nearly double the €11.7 billion valuation Mistral AI achieved during its Series C funding round in September of last year.
As one of Europe's prominent AI startups, Mistral AI was established in 2023 with the explicit mission to "put frontier AI in the hands of everyone." The company distinguishes itself through a more open approach to AI development compared to its American counterparts, offering certain foundational large language models with open weights, thereby enabling users to customize them freely.
Beyond its open-source offerings, Mistral AI also provides proprietary models designed for specific applications, including programming assistance, voice cloning and generation, and optical character recognition.
In the current climate where European nations are increasingly seeking independence from American technology, Mistral AI has strategically positioned itself as a reliable, "sovereign," and domestically developed alternative. Demonstrating this commitment, the company is establishing a data center near Paris and has forged partnerships with the French army, the government of Luxembourg, and several leading European corporations.
Despite its significant regional traction, Mistral AI has, according to Pitchbook, raised approximately $4 billion to date. This amount is a mere fraction of the capital secured by its U.S. competitors, such as OpenAI ($186 billion) and Anthropic ($161.25 billion). These American laboratories also boast considerably higher valuations, underscoring their advanced position in terms of revenue generation, model adoption rates, and enterprise demand.
Mistral AI has not yet responded to a request for comment regarding these reports.
