Mistral, the French AI company, has made the weights for its trillion-parameter open-source model, Mistral Large 4 (ML4), available for download. Nicknamed "Le Chonk," this system was unveiled earlier this month, giving businesses and government entities the ability to deploy the technology independently.
This move highlights the intensifying rivalry between open-weight developers like Mistral and closed-model giants such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Open-source proponents argue that organizations should not be dependent on external providers for advanced capabilities, a perspective that resonates strongly within the cybersecurity sector where data control is paramount.
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral, emphasized that AI must serve as an "empowerment tool, not a tool of dominance." By releasing Le Chonk, the company asserts it delivers "state-of-the-art performance" while requiring significantly less computing power and capital investment compared to closed research laboratories.
The release of these weights—the numerical data driving the model's intelligence—enables other entities to utilize ML4 for their specific needs.
Mistral claims its model rivals GLM-5.3, a top-tier Chinese open-weight competitor known for cybersecurity tasks. However, ML4 is more economical, utilizing 47 percent fewer tokens per task. Additionally, the model leads all other open-source models on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index for agentic coding tasks.
"Amid growing cyber threats, ML4 brings state-of-the-art sovereign cyber defense capabilities to enterprises and governments globally," the company stated. "Institutions can now download, deploy, and own frontier AI to detect, analyze, and respond to threats across code and IT infrastructure."
The model is accessible via Hugging Face and its API.
Pierre Stock, Vice President of Science at Mistral, explained that releasing the weights allows organizations to maintain control over AI defense strategies. "Concretely, this means that as a business or government, you have access to frontier intelligence to defend against cyberattacks that cannot be severed because the model is open-weighted," he noted.
Stock noted the model can "identify, coordinate, and respond in real time to major security incidents" and supports on-prem deployment. Highlighting the importance of widespread adoption, he stated, "some malicious actors might try to leverage their own technology to attack," so companies must provide this capability to everyone to strengthen the ecosystem.
Regarding concerns over rogue AI agents, Stock acknowledged the risks but argued against panic, stating, "We don’t want to fearmonger people. We think it’s a problem that is solvable."
