Mirage, the company behind the popular video editing application Captions, has successfully secured $75 million in growth financing. This significant investment comes from General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund (CVF).

The startup has undergone substantial transformations over the past year, encompassing both its product offerings and its corporate identity. Originally known as Captions, the company rebranded to Mirage, strategically repositioning itself as an AI lab dedicated to developing diverse models and serving sectors such as advertising and marketing. Notably, Mirage has also developed a specialized AI model designed to optimize pacing, framing, and attention dynamics within short-form video content.

Furthermore, Mirage plans to adopt a freemium business model starting January 2025. This strategic shift aims to enhance its competitive standing against established applications like ByteDance’s CapCut and Meta’s Edits, which launched later in the year. The company has also introduced a comprehensive video creation suite, incorporating key features from Captions, enabling businesses to generate and disseminate videos on a large scale.

According to Gaurav Misra, co-founder and CEO of Mirage, the company's future strategy involves developing additional AI models. While refraining from detailing the specific functionalities of these upcoming models, Misra indicated that they would concentrate on "assembly intelligence," which he described as the capability to construct videos by integrating various sources and components.

Discussing Mirage’s innovative new audio model, which is touted for its ability to preserve original accents in generated videos, Misra elaborated: “The reason for the audio model was that we noticed that there was a gap in accents because a lot of our users are international. Accents are just very important. There was my own dad’s example. He was trying to use the app, and he would say a word in an Indian accent, and it would always make it sound like he’s talking in an American accent.”

Data provided by analytics firm AppFigures reveals that the Captions app has garnered over 3.2 million downloads within the past 365 days, generating an impressive $28.4 million in in-app revenue. Misra further stated that the platform has facilitated the creation of more than 200 million videos to date, cultivating a robust international user base, with only 25% of its total revenue originating from the U.S. market.

At present, Mirage offers a web-based marketing suite, while Captions primarily provides a mobile-first editing experience. The company's strategic objective is to integrate these two platforms, thereby enhancing its ability to serve small businesses seeking to produce marketing videos efficiently.

Pranav Singhvi, managing director of General Catalyst’s CVF fund, expressed strong confidence in Mirage, remarking that the company demonstrates an excellent product-market fit.

Singhvi elaborated on his optimism in an interview with TechCrunch, stating, “Mirage’s business equation is extremely figured out. They know exactly how to spend that dollar and generate a very attractive ROI. If you think about the market they’re going after, it’s in a sense an infinite total addressable market. You can start out in the creator world, the influencer world, and then use that as a mechanism to sell to enterprises as well.”

The landscape of AI-powered video generation for marketing is increasingly competitive, with numerous companies developing sophisticated pipelines. Prominent players include Canva, which has unveiled various tools for marketing creation and tracking, and platforms such as D-ID, HeyGen, Webflow, and Avataar, all actively releasing new models and features.

Despite this crowded market, Singhvi remains highly confident in Mirage’s strategic positioning and its unit economics. He affirmed, “Regardless of what the other tools are out there, Mirage is clearly ahead of the pack from a unit economics standpoint. Ultimately, it’s all a reflection of their product.”

Mirage intends to deploy this newly acquired capital to accelerate its growth trajectory and expand its footprint into high-growth markets across Asia.
