Microsoft has unveiled the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact computing solution specifically engineered for local-first artificial intelligence development.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of the new Surface Laptop Ultra, revealed just last weekend. The miniature Surface PC is aimed squarely at developers and shares the same foundational technology as its laptop counterpart, utilizing Nvidia’s cutting-edge Arm-based RTX Spark chips. It is meticulously optimized to handle demanding, sustained workloads and complex local AI tasks efficiently.
Visually, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box evokes the sleek design of an Xbox Series X console's upper section, featuring an aluminum chassis that ingeniously doubles as an integrated heatsink. This design contributes to its robust thermal management, boasting a 100-watt thermal envelope—a notable increase compared to the 45-watt to 80-watt envelopes typically found in Nvidia’s RTX Spark laptops. Furthermore, the device is equipped with an impressive 128GB of unified memory, empowering it to locally run AI models comprising up to 120 billion parameters.
Microsoft is ensuring the Dev Box is ready for immediate productivity by preconfiguring it with essential developer applications such as Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot, alongside other vital tools. Andrew Hill, corporate vice president of Surface, emphasized the developer-centric nature of its setup: “Surface RTX Spark Dev Box ships with Windows 11 Pro pre-configured for developers at the image level. The setup keeps developers in their workflow: dark theme, taskbar simplified for development, Widgets removed, Do Not Disturb on. Developer Mode is enabled. PowerShell 7 is the default shell.”
The RTX Spark Dev Box enters a growing market of miniature PCs from various OEMs that are adopting Nvidia’s new RTX Spark chips. Significantly, it also serves as a direct successor to Qualcomm’s ill-fated Snapdragon Dev Kit. That miniature Windows on Arm PC was initially slated for release two years prior to assist developers in porting applications to Windows on Arm, but its launch was ultimately canceled due to complications related to hardware quality from Qualcomm.
While comprehensive specifications and pricing details are yet to be disclosed, Microsoft confirms that the RTX Spark Dev Box will become available in the US later this year, exclusively through its online store.
