At Build 2026, Microsoft unveiled a suite of seven new in-house AI models, with MAI-Thinking-1 positioned as its new "flagship" offering. This launch signifies an ambitious advancement in Microsoft's proprietary model development, building upon the initial in-house models introduced last year. This strategic shift follows a period where the company predominantly relied on OpenAI's models, a relationship that recently saw renegotiated terms aimed at fostering greater independence.

Described by Microsoft as a "medium-sized model," MAI-Thinking-1 is reported to "match leading models" across "key" software engineering benchmarks. The company emphasized its unique development approach, stating it "trained it from the ground up on clean data, without distillation from third-party models," underscoring its commitment to original research and development.

In addition to MAI-Thinking-1, Microsoft introduced several other models designed to enhance capabilities in critical AI domains, specifically focusing on image generation, transcription, voice, and coding.

Among these releases are MAI-Image 2.5 and its flash variant, which offer advanced text-to-image generation and image editing functionalities. For audio processing, MAI-Transcribe-1.5 boasts impressive speed, being "five times faster than competing models." The MAI-Voice-2 model, alongside its forthcoming flash version, significantly expands linguistic support by adding 15 new languages and introducing a broader array of voice options. Furthermore, the new coding model, MAI-Code-1, is highlighted for being "inference-efficient" and is seamlessly integrated into popular developer tools like GitHub Copilot and Visual Studio Code.
