Microsoft unveiled its inaugural cybersecurity-focused AI model and a complementary AI cybersecurity platform at an event in San Francisco on Monday. This strategic launch positions the tech giant squarely against established players in the AI space, including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.

The company introduces MAI-Cyber-1-Flash as a sophisticated model engineered "to find challenging vulnerabilities in complex codebases." This model is specifically designed to power MDASH, Microsoft's proprietary framework dedicated to the identification and remediation of software vulnerabilities.

Dubbed Perception, the new security platform is engineered to deploy autonomous teams of agents, facilitating and automating various security workflows. These capabilities encompass the identification and remediation of bugs, and the platform is also designed to integrate seamlessly with MDASH.

Microsoft asserts that MAI-Cyber-1-Flash demonstrates significantly superior performance and cost-effectiveness compared to competitor models, a claim substantiated by its results on a recognized AI cybersecurity benchmark.

“We’re very very excited to announce our results,” stated Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and current CEO of Microsoft AI. He elaborated, “We have MAI-1 Cyber Flash binded [sic] with GPT 5.4 inside of the MDASH harness — which beats out Gemini, GPT 5.5 Cyber, GPT 5.6 Sol, and Mythos 5 on Cyber Gym, which is the primary benchmark that we all use. The golden benchmark.”

Suleyman further confirmed the immediate deployment of this innovative solution, adding, “We’re shipping this into production immediately.”

Recognizing the growing trend of hackers leveraging AI in their cyberattacks, Hayete Gallot, Microsoft’s vice president for security, characterized Perception as a crucial tool for enterprise defenders to “defend against AI with AI at the scale and speed that the attackers have.”

Perception operates through the deployment of agentic red, blue, and green teams. Red teams are tasked with providing detailed simulations of potential attacks, offering insights into hypothetical threat actors and their likely exploitable vulnerabilities. Blue teams focus on detecting and triaging existing bugs, while green teams are responsible for implementing “corrective actions” against these identified issues.

Dave Weston, the lead engineer for Perception, heralded the platform as a substantial efficiency upgrade for corporate security teams. He explained, “We’ve gone from this taking hours and hours of manual work from multiple specialized folks across the security organization — appsec hunters, remediation engineers, you name it — and in minutes, we have a fix for all of this. Not only do we discover the issues and prioritize them, but we have detection, posture fixing, and even a code fix.”

While AI has undeniably introduced novel defensive capabilities for organizations, its increasing accessibility to cybercriminals has simultaneously spawned a complex and extensive array of potential threats.

Microsoft’s new security tools, slated for a preview release on November 3, are set to enter an increasingly competitive landscape of AI cybersecurity solutions. This year alone has seen Anthropic launch Mythos, a security platform delivered to select partner organizations via its Glasswing program, and OpenAI introduce its own security solution in May through a program known as Day Break.
