Microsoft is reportedly exploring the integration of features akin to OpenClaw within its 365 Copilot AI assistant, according to a recent report from The Information. This initiative is understood to be part of a broader strategy to enable 365 Copilot to operate continuously and autonomously, executing tasks on behalf of users around the clock.

Omar Shahine, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, confirmed to The Information that the company is indeed "exploring the potential of technologies like OpenClaw in an enterprise context." OpenClaw, an open-source platform, empowers users to develop AI-driven agents that function directly on their local devices. While gaining significant traction earlier this year, the platform has subsequently prompted considerable security concerns.

Despite these concerns, sources have indicated to The Information that Microsoft is confident in its ability to deploy "safer" iterations of this technology. An "always-on" version of 365 Copilot could potentially monitor a user’s Outlook inbox and calendar, subsequently generating a daily list of suggested tasks. Furthermore, Microsoft is investigating the development of OpenClaw-inspired agents specifically tailored for roles such as marketing, sales, and accounting, aiming to "limit the permissions the agent needs" and effectively silo them from other business functions, as detailed by The Information.

The Information also noted that Microsoft intends to unveil some of these forthcoming capabilities at its Build conference, scheduled to commence on June 2nd. This strategic move follows Anthropic's earlier integrations of its Claude AI chatbot into Microsoft 365 services and the introduction of its Claude Cowork tool to Copilot for managing "long-running, multi-step tasks." By incorporating OpenClaw-like functionalities, Microsoft aims to strengthen its competitive standing and potentially reclaim customers who may have shifted to rival AI services.
