Microsoft’s high-end AI mini PC for developers is now available for preorder, with shipments expected to begin in November. The Nvidia-powered Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is priced at approximately $6,000, making it slightly more expensive than the DGX Spark mini PC released last year, although rising component costs have driven up PC prices generally.
The device features a flat, 3D-printed anodized aluminum chassis that functions as a heatsink and mimics the top vents of an Xbox Series X. It launches alongside the new Surface Laptop Ultra and is powered by Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark platform, equipped with 128GB of unified memory.
Despite the high memory capacity and 100-watt thermal envelope, the machine is primarily designed for developers. It is optimized for local AI processing, capable of running models with parameters exceeding 120B for tasks such as testing models, prototyping agents, or running coding tools directly on the device.
As part of Microsoft’s Project Zenith initiative, the Dev Box ships with a developer-focused Windows 11 Pro installation. It comes preloaded with essential development software, including Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub CLI, GitHub Copilot, WSL, Python, and Node.
