Microsoft has formally named its developer-optimized Windows initiative as Project Zenith. Although the software giant unveiled a similar effort at Build earlier this year, Project Zenith is specifically tailored for next-generation developer-centric hardware featuring 64GB or more of unified memory.
Logan Iyer, Microsoft’s CVP of Windows platform and developer, explained, “Project Zenith devices come with a preconfigured Windows setup for development and a set of tools curated for what developers reach for first.” He noted that these systems allow users to run 30B+ parameter models locally and unmetered, which accelerates experimentation and helps decrease dependence on metered cloud tokens.
AMD revealed the first Project Zenith device on stage at IFA earlier today; this is a miniature PC powered by Ryzen AI Halo chips. The company indicated that additional devices will be released in the coming months, featuring different silicon options.
The Project Zenith hardware will come pre-loaded with essential developer utilities such as Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI, and Windows Dev Skills. Furthermore, the File Explorer has been customized to display file extensions, hidden files, and full paths in the title bar. Microsoft has also disabled recently used file/folder lists and sync provider tips, enabled long-path support, turned off Start menu tips and account notifications, and enabled the PowerToys Command Palette by default.
Several of these modifications are features that arguably should be standard on every Windows 11 installation, particularly those aimed at eliminating annoying system distractions. Microsoft is currently on a mission to significantly enhance Windows 11, and Project Zenith represents the software company's specific initiative for the developer community.
Iyer stated, “Project Zenith is the result of listening to developers about what they need from Windows today, and where they want the platform to go next.” He added, “As AI continues to transform software development, we are committed to evolving Windows alongside the community that builds on it.”
