Microsoft has initiated a new round of workforce reductions, impacting approximately 4,800 employees, or 2.1 percent of its global workforce, as the company commences its new financial year. These significant adjustments follow a previous round of cuts a year prior, which saw around 9,100 employees depart. The majority of the current job eliminations are concentrated within Microsoft’s Xbox division and its commercial sales organizations.

In an internal communication to staff, Amy Coleman, Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer at Microsoft, attributed these job losses to the evolving landscape of the technology industry. She emphasized the "need to adjust resources and roles and shift how we operate" to effectively respond to the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on corporations such as Microsoft. Coleman clarified, stating, “I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI.” However, she acknowledged, “At the same time, what is true is that AI is changing how work gets done.”

The Xbox division will experience a substantial impact, with approximately 8 percent of its current workforce affected by today’s layoffs, and a projected total of around 15 percent of Xbox jobs to be eliminated by the close of the financial year. Concurrently, Microsoft is undertaking a strategic restructuring of its Xbox business following sustained challenges, involving the sale of four Xbox studios and consideration of divesting an additional studio, in an effort to "reset" its operations.

Coleman underscored the inherent difficulty of these decisions, affirming her "commitment that we are constantly looking for ways to reduce the need for job eliminations." She highlighted the company's proactive approach, stating, "Whenever possible, our priority is to place people into new roles aligned to the company’s highest priorities and greatest areas of opportunity." This strategy has already seen the successful redeployment of over 4,000 employees into new positions over the past year, with an additional 500 transitioned this month alone.

In an effort to mitigate the necessity of layoffs, Microsoft had previously introduced a voluntary retirement program. This initiative was open to eligible US employees whose combined age and years of service totaled 70 or more. The comprehensive retirement package offered included five years of Microsoft’s healthcare coverage, a substantial lump sum cash severance payment, and six months of vesting for previously unvested stock options.

Coleman reported a strong uptake in the voluntary retirement program, with "more than 30 percent of eligible employees" opting to participate. She indicated that the company plans to "continue exploring similar approaches in the future." While acknowledging that such initiatives do not diminish the challenging nature of the current announcements, Coleman reiterated Microsoft's unwavering commitment to "create opportunities for our people, reduce the need for job eliminations where possible, and responsibly support those affected with care and respect.”
