Microsoft has officially made Copilot Agent Mode the standard experience for all Microsoft 365 Copilot and Premium subscribers.
This week marks the introduction of a new Agent Mode within core Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This enhanced iteration of the Copilot experience, previously termed “vibe working” by Microsoft, represents a more robust offering that the company has been actively promoting to enterprises.
Sumit Chauhan, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Office Product Group, acknowledged the initial limitations, stating, “When we first shipped Copilot, foundation models were not powerful enough to use Copilot to command the applications.” He further elaborated on this, explaining, “This meant Copilot was a passive partner in documents: it could answer questions but missed the mark when it was asked to take action on the canvas directly.”
The newly implemented Agent Mode is engineered to more effectively interpret and execute commands and edits across documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Chauhan highlighted the significant progress, noting, “Over the past year, models have made meaningful leaps in instruction following, reasoning, and overall quality, and are now better at handling multi-step edits reliably without losing your intent.”
Users will now have the ability to observe the Copilot AI agent in real-time operation, facilitated by a dedicated sidebar that visually tracks each action Copilot performs on a document. Within Excel, it can directly modify workbooks by adding formulas or tables. Similarly, PowerPoint's Agent Mode is capable of updating existing presentations with new information while preserving the corporate template styling.
These advanced Copilot features are being deployed as the default experience for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers, and are also accessible to users with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions.
