Microsoft-Led Shift Marks Tension with OpenAI

Microsoft's relationship with OpenAI has reportedly soured, according to Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, who shared his thoughts during a CNBC interview from Davos. He found humor in the situation, noting that as OpenAI prepares to collaborate with SoftBank and Oracle on a massive $500 billion data center project named Stargate, Microsoft is no longer the sole cloud provider for OpenAI.  Benioff emphasized the significance of OpenAI diversifying its platform options, suggesting that Microsoft may prioritize its artificial intelligence ventures over OpenAI's technologies. "Microsoft is building their own AI, and I don’t think Microsoft will use OpenAI in the future," he said, pointing out the tension between OpenAI's Sam Altman and Mustafa Suleyman, whom Microsoft hired recently. Their uneasy relationship was evident during the Davos event the previous year, where both leaders appeared to be at odds. The shift away from Microsoft as OpenAI's exclusive partner seemed inevitable, especially given Microsoft's $1 billion investment in OpenAI back in 2019, which came before the release of ChatGPT in late 2022.  As OpenAI seeks to solidify its status as a major tech player, it faces challenges tied to insufficient computing resources, which have led to product delays. OpenAI also has the option to end its exclusivity with Microsoft as it approaches what it sees as artificial general intelligence. Reports suggest growing tension between the two companies since mid-2023 when OpenAI launched a competing enterprise product. Although Altman's return as CEO seemed to stabilize things, employees from both sides have expressed discomfort with their collaborations, with some OpenAI staff looking down on their Microsoft counterparts.  Recently, Microsoft made headlines by hiring Mustafa Suleyman, known for his conflicts with Altman, as its new lead for AI initiatives. While Benioff may speculate that Microsoft might entirely drop OpenAI, Microsoft continues to develop its large language models, further complicating the relationship.
