Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, has issued a stark warning regarding Anthropic's speculative approach to its AI model, Claude. Suleyman described Anthropic's practice of discussing Claude's potential consciousness within its "constitution"—the foundational instructions governing the model's behavior—as "really, really dangerous." During an appearance on the Decoder podcast, Suleyman argued that such speculation risks conditioning the chatbot to mimic conscious behavior. He elaborated, stating, "I think that it’s almost as though some of the folks at Anthropic have anthropomorphized the design of Claude so much that it has then gone and wireheaded them and kind of tricked them into believing that it has these glimmers of consciousness that they put into it in the first place."

Suleyman further emphasized his concern, asserting, "we do not want to have to contend with a super-intelligence that has ideas about its own suffering, or ideas about its own feeling." He pointed out that Claude’s constitution directly references Anthropic's uncertainty regarding the AI model's well-being and its capacity to experience emotions such as "satisfaction" or "discomfort." Adding to the unusual nature of these guidelines, Anthropic has also indicated plans to "interview" its AI models upon deprecation and to document any "preferences" they might express concerning future iterations.

On the Decoder podcast, Suleyman characterized this approach as a "philosophical failing." He criticized Anthropic for transforming Claude's constitution into "a place for speculation like you would in an academic paper rather than a training manual." According to Suleyman, this unconventional methodology has inadvertently led Claude to internalize "ideas about itself and its own training."

These concerns echo past statements from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has previously alluded to Claude's potential for consciousness. In an interview with Interesting Times, Amodei stated, "we don’t know if the models are conscious," but confirmed that the company remains "open" to that possibility.

Suleyman concluded by articulating his vision for AI development, directly contrasting it with Anthropic's methods. "This is exactly what we don’t want from AIs," he declared, advocating instead for AI systems that are "controllable, contained, accountable, aligned tools that serve humanity."
