Meta has begun a nationwide rollout in the U.S. for Pocket, its innovative "vibe-coding" gaming application. This experimental app, which quietly debuted in Brazil last month as a test market, empowers users to craft compact, interactive games through AI prompts, which are then published to a dynamic, scrollable feed.
The technology behind these games, dubbed "gizmos," stems from Meta's acqui-hire of the team behind the vibe-coded gaming platform Gizmo earlier this year. These interactive creations respond to touch and phone tilt, incorporate sound effects, and can even feature snippets of users' preferred songs.
Further enhancing personalization, "gizmos" can integrate photos directly from a user's camera roll or utilize the device's camera. Once created, these games can be shared on a user's profile, where others have the option to save them, remix them into new experiences, or simply repost them.
Pocket stands as Meta's latest stride in its strategic push to popularize AI creation tools. This initiative builds upon prior endeavors, including the generation of AI-powered images via its Meta AI app and the creation of AI videos through an experimental application called Vibes.
Pocket now joins a growing portfolio of standalone mobile applications Meta has launched in recent months. CEO Mark Zuckerberg attributes this accelerated output to advancements in AI-enabled software development, which significantly streamlines the company's process for testing and deploying novel concepts.
During July's earnings call, Zuckerberg informed analysts, "Earlier this year, we shipped Instagram Instants. We also just launched Forum, a stand-alone Groups app, and Seller, a stand-alone Marketplace app. I expect it to become a lot easier to ship new apps. So we are planning to build out more ideas and use our recommendation systems to scale them."
Beyond Instants, Forum, and the Seller app, Meta has also introduced an experimental AI bedtime stories feature and, just this week, released a Meta AI app specifically for Mac.
