In an exciting move on Monday, Caitlin Kalinowski, who led Meta’s augmented reality glasses, is joining OpenAI to head its robotics and consumer hardware team. She shared her enthusiasm for bringing artificial intelligence into the physical world on LinkedIn.
About her role, she shared:
“I’m delighted to share that I’m joining OpenAI to lead robotics and consumer hardware. In my new role, I will initially focus on OpenAI’s robotics work and partnerships to help bring AI into the physical world and unlock its benefits for humanity.”
Kalinowski has a strong background in tech. She directed Meta’s AR glasses team since March 2022 and played a key role in developing the Orion prototype shown at Meta’s Connect conference.
Before that, she worked for nearly ten years on virtual reality goggles and helped design MacBooks at Apple. At OpenAI, Kalinowski will focus on advancing robotics projects and forming partnerships to enhance AI’s impact.
There’s also gossip about her teaming up with Jony Ive, her former boss. Ive is working with OpenAI on a new AI hardware product that aims to create a smoother computing experience than the iPhone, potentially reshaping how we interact with technology.
This change comes as OpenAI revives its robotics team, which had previously shifted its focus entirely to software.
Companies like Apple and Figure are already using OpenAI’s technology in their products. Kalinowski’s new role marks a thrilling step for OpenAI as it aims to connect AI with real-world applications and improve everyday life for people everywhere.
