Meta's innovative AI image generation model now enables users to reference specific accounts directly within their prompts using the '@ mention' feature.

Meta has officially unveiled its premier AI image generation model, developed by its Superintelligence Labs division. Named Muse Image, this model currently powers the image creation tools across the Meta AI app, Instagram, and WhatsApp, with an impending rollout to Facebook and Messenger, as announced on Tuesday.

Muse Image is an integral part of the evolving Muse family of AI models, which is slated to replace Meta's existing Llama lineup. Alexandr Wang, who was recruited last year to spearhead Meta's Superintelligence Labs, stated on Threads that Muse Image is "agentic." This implies its ability to collaborate with the Muse Spark large language model "to reason through your prompt, search the web, and plan before it generates." Wang also teased the future launch of a Muse Video model, emphasizing its anticipated "competitive" performance in "prompt adherence, visual fidelity, [and] temporal consistency."

As highlighted by Meta, users can '@ mention' other Instagram accounts within Muse Image prompts, allowing the AI model to seamlessly incorporate their likeness into the generated output. Meta clarifies that "tagging a username lets Meta AI use public photos to build a visual," while also noting that users retain control over how their content is reused for AI applications.

The model offers extensive creative capabilities, enabling users to transform images using suggested prompts and design various items such as invitations and postcards. Muse Image can also re-envision rooms based on images sourced from Facebook Marketplace or elsewhere on the web. Furthermore, it facilitates direct photo modifications by allowing users to draw directly onto images, which can then be shared to their feed, stories, or chats. The Muse Image model is set to drive the introduction of 30 new AI effects for Instagram Stories, initially in the US, before expanding to other countries and additional areas within Meta's applications.
