Meta is currently piloting a new feature on Threads that allows users to tag a dedicated Meta AI account to obtain answers to questions or gain additional context within ongoing conversations on the platform. This initiative, announced on Tuesday, bears a notable resemblance to the functionality seen on X, where users can tag xAI’s Grok for similar purposes. However, the introduction of Meta AI has been met with considerable user dissatisfaction, primarily stemming from the immediate discovery, as reported by Engadget, that the new Meta AI account cannot be blocked.

This development is part of Meta's substantial investment in artificial intelligence, a strategic move aimed at narrowing the gap with industry leaders like OpenAI and Google. The company has allocated billions towards recruiting top AI talent and previously launched its Muse Spark AI model in April, with intentions to integrate it across its various applications and services. The Meta AI account on Threads represents a tangible manifestation of this strategy. A demonstration video showcases the feature, initially available for testing in select regions including Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, where users can tag Meta AI to query topics such as "why is everyone obsessed with matcha" or seek pronunciation guidance for words like "Cannes."

Despite its utility, a critical point of contention for users is the absence of a blocking option. Unlike standard user accounts, navigating to the three-dots menu on the Meta AI profile currently reveals no functionality to block it.

This oversight has provoked a significant backlash across the platform. Numerous angry replies have been directed at posts from the Meta AI account itself, the main Threads account, and even Threads head Connor Hayes. Furthermore, some users who momentarily observed a block option reported encountering errors when attempting to utilize it. Engadget's Karissa Bell noted that "Users cannot block Meta AI" briefly trended on Threads, accumulating over one million posts, though she subsequently observed its disappearance from the trending topics, a sentiment echoed by other reporters.

In response to the concerns, Meta spokesperson Christine Pai informed The Verge that "Users can manage their Meta AI experience during the test." Pai elaborated on the feature's intent, stating, "We want to give people a way to quickly gather context before jumping into the conversation." For users who wish to reduce the visibility of Meta AI replies in their Threads feed, alternatives to blocking are available, including muting or hiding Meta AI replies, or selecting the ‘Not interested’ option on any Meta AI post.
