For an extended period, WhatsApp has served as a fundamental communication channel for enterprises across the globe, irrespective of their size. Meta is now embedding artificial intelligence into this layer, aiming to transform WhatsApp into a robust workflow software solution specifically tailored for small and medium-sized businesses.
The company announced on Wednesday the global availability of its customer support AI bot, now officially named Meta Business Agent, within the WhatsApp platform. This launch follows nearly two years of extensive testing of AI agents for customer support within WhatsApp Business in key markets such as India and Mexico.
Meta detailed that the AI agent is capable of addressing customer inquiries, providing product recommendations, scheduling appointments, qualifying sales leads, and seamlessly rerouting complex queries to human agents when necessary. Furthermore, the company is extending the availability of this bot to Instagram Direct Messages.
Meta also revealed ongoing trials for a feature within the Business Agent that would deliver daily briefings of overnight chats and generate valuable insights. This particular functionality is currently being tested with selected accounts across WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger, and Meta Business Suite.
The company stated its commitment to integrating additional capabilities into the agent, including market research functionalities, highlighting product features, managing user calendars, and connecting with external tools to extract competitive intelligence.
Additionally, Meta is working to enable the Agent to proactively surface relevant businesses when users conduct searches or share contact details within a chat. Concurrently, it is developing a dedicated platform for larger enterprises, allowing them to create custom AI agents that can integrate with established systems like Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee.
Meta plans to monetize the use of this AI agent by incorporating it into specific tiers of its WhatsApp Business Premium subscription. For large businesses, the company indicated that charges for the agent would be based on their token usage.
This strategic move is of critical importance for WhatsApp, which has historically relied on revenue generated from businesses paying for messaging services and click-to-WhatsApp advertisements.
