Meta's personal AI agent, Muse, is young but the company is quickly expanding it into what seems to be their most significant consumer AI wager yet. CEO Mark Zuckerberg opened the annual Connect event in Menlo Park by confirming Meta's full commitment to the project.
The Muse agent (with a physical avatar called Jolly) handles everyday tasks by linking to users' apps and services like email and calendars. Zuckerberg introduced new features and integrations to make Muse more useful and integrated into daily life, potentially appearing on Meta AI glasses.
Launched in early September, Muse operates across devices and digital accounts using Muse Spark, Meta's multimodal AI model. It aims to be more accessible than competitors, allowing users to automate mundane tasks from the start.
"The centerpiece of our vision for what we're building is Muse," Zuckerberg stated during his keynote. He expressed confidence that Muse will evolve into the personal superintelligence billions of people will use to achieve their goals and enhance their lives.
Zuckerberg also mentioned monetization, noting that while Muse will be free initially with a high token allowance, Meta plans to profit eventually by taking a small fee from transactions.
New announcements include the ability for users to create unique digital avatars for their agent and engage in real-time video chats. Meta developed a new AI model, Muse Realtime Avatar, to give faceless AI software a face, body, and voice.
Muse is also integrating with Meta's smart glasses line, allowing users to communicate via wake word. The agent will assist with workouts, meal logging, and purchases.
Mac users will gain access to Muse, allowing task delegation and background operation of desktop apps. Meta's chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, demonstrated how users can walk away while the agent handles business or work tasks.
Since Muse works in the background, it will require its own email address, which Meta is developing for release soon. Users can also add the agent to email threads to handle correspondence.
Meta has secured partnerships with companies like Stripe and Shopify, highlighting Muse's utility for shopping. The agent can access Shopify catalogs and use Shop Pay to purchase items online.
New retail partnerships include Best Buy, Gap, Sephora, Walmart, and Wayfair. Muse will connect with Expedia, Instacart, GitHub, and Notion.
Wang noted Meta hopes to connect with small businesses by opening its platform to developers to build connectors. Over 1,500 applications were received in a week, signaling a strong start for the platform.
