Meta is leveraging a novel data source for its artificial intelligence models: the digital interactions of its own workforce. The tech giant intends to harness data derived from the mouse movements and keystrokes of its staff to enhance the capabilities and efficiency of its AI systems.

This development, initially reported by Reuters, underscores the extraordinary efforts tech companies are undertaking to secure new streams of training data—an essential component that enables AI models to learn effectively, execute tasks, and respond accurately to user inquiries.

In response to an inquiry from TechCrunch, a Meta spokesperson issued a statement explaining the rationale: “If we’re building agents to help people complete everyday tasks using computers, our models need real examples of how people actually use them — things like mouse movements, clicking buttons, and navigating dropdown menus. To help, we’re launching an internal tool that will capture these kinds of inputs on certain applications to help us train our models. There are safeguards in place to protect sensitive content, and the data is not used for any other purpose.”

This emerging practice appears to highlight significant privacy concerns within the artificial intelligence sector, as what were once private internal corporate communications are progressively being repurposed as raw material for a nascent corporate data supply chain. Just last week, reports indicated that defunct startups were being systematically mined for their historical corporate communications—including Slack archives, Jira tickets, and other internal messaging platform data—to be transformed into valuable AI training material.
