Meta has withdrawn a contentious AI feature that enabled users to alter images sourced from public Instagram profiles. Launched just this week as part of a suite of new AI functionalities, the company acknowledged that the tool "missed the mark" and has since been removed.

The week began with Meta's introduction of Muse Image, an innovative AI image generator developed by its specialized division, Meta Superintelligence Labs. A specific functionality within this tool, which permitted users to create new images by referencing public Instagram accounts via an @-mention, quickly drew criticism. Crucially, the system did not notify the original account holder that their photos were being utilized in this manner, leading to immediate public outcry.

TechCrunch had even published a detailed guide instructing users on how to deactivate this specific feature.

In response to the feedback, Meta has now reversed its decision. The company officially announced the feature's removal in a blog post on Friday. Dylan Byers, a founding partner at Puck News, was the first to report Meta's change of heart.

Meta stated on its blog, "Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available."

TechCrunch has sought further clarification from Meta and will update its reporting upon receiving a response.

The integration of AI into social media platforms has frequently led to widespread misuse, notoriously involving the generation of explicit images of female celebrities. While platforms have implemented measures to curb this trend, these safeguards have often proven insufficient.

Regarding Meta's recently withdrawn feature, its potential for abuse appeared evident. Byers further highlights that the company's decision to discontinue the tool followed "scrutiny from users and talent agencies, including CAA."
