Following Meta's substantial multi-billion dollar investment in superintelligence, the technology community is keenly observing whether the successor to its Llama models will fulfill the heightened expectations. Meta Superintelligence Labs has now unveiled its inaugural model since CEO Mark Zuckerberg initiated a multi-billion dollar restructuring of the company's artificial intelligence endeavors. This new model, named Muse Spark, is currently powering the Meta AI application and the Meta AI website across the United States, as announced by the company. Over the coming weeks, Meta plans to integrate Muse Spark into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and its smart glasses, alongside a phased rollout in additional international markets.

Mirroring the seamless integration approach of Google Gemini within Google's product ecosystem, Meta positions Muse Spark as "purpose-built for Meta’s products." This model, which marks the debut of a new series, will also be accessible to select Meta partners through a private preview via an API. The company highlights its capabilities, including the orchestration of multiple AI sub-agents for more efficient and accurate query resolution, and robust support for multimodal input encompassing both text and images. The latter feature holds particular significance for Meta’s AI-powered camera glasses, which the company has championed as the latest frontier in computing. Users will have the flexibility to switch between a rapid "Instant" mode and a "Thinking" mode, designed to deliver more thoroughly reasoned outcomes, akin to features such as Microsoft’s Think Deeper.

Meta further emphasized Muse Spark's proficiency in addressing "complex questions in science, math, and health." The domain of health-focused AI chatbots has recently sparked controversy due to concerns over handling sensitive personal data and the potential for disseminating misinformation. Meta asserts that Muse Spark’s multimodal perception is "especially valuable for health," enabling it to "navigate health questions with more detailed responses, including some questions involving images and charts." This move suggests Meta's intent to vie with offerings like OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health and Anthropic’s Claude for Healthcare, both of which launched in January. During its announcement, Meta showcased the chatbot's ability to estimate the calorie content of a meal—a popular, albeit frequently inconsistent, application of AI technology.

Looking ahead, Meta envisions Muse Spark driving new features that will "cite recommendations and content people share across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads." The company also indicated that larger models are currently under development, with aspirations to open-source future iterations. Meta characterizes Muse Spark as an "early data point" that illustrates the developmental trajectory of its new Muse series.

The Muse series represents Meta's second significant venture into advanced AI, building upon the foundation of its Llama models. This strategic revamp of the company's AI program by Zuckerberg was prompted by the delayed and ultimately disappointing release of Llama 4 in 2025.
