Meta may indefinitely postpone the implementation of its new business terms following significant opposition from publishers regarding AI training.

In a statement posted on X, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone clarified that the company has "no intention of altering policies without first conducting a comprehensive consultation with industry leaders and groups."

Originally set to go into effect on October 30th, the terms were initially designed to grant Meta permission to train its AI models on content from Facebook and Instagram news sites. Although Meta later revised the policies to remove specific language regarding "training" on scraped content, legal experts noted that this update does not fully eliminate the possibility of AI training.

To address these concerns, Meta initially deferred enforcement until November 20th; however, that deadline may now be pushed back indefinitely.

"We have listened to publishers' feedback regarding our proposed ads and business terms update," Stone remarked. "We are dedicated to getting this right, and given the anticipated length of the consultation, we will delay implementation until further notice, keeping our existing terms in effect in the interim."

The backlash extended beyond the News/Media Alliance, prompting senators from both parties to voice their concerns. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) criticized the terms as an attempt to "exploit American creators and businesses," while Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) called for Meta to reverse the changes.
