Meta’s Muse, a personal AI agent capable of booking travel, filling out forms, and shopping on behalf of users, has already garnered significant popularity. However, a new side project may prove particularly alluring to tinkerers and developers.
On Friday, the company unveiled Muse Gadgets, an open-source initiative that empowers developers to construct their own hardware compatible with the Muse system. Meta is providing essential resources, including open-source firmware, a Linux software development kit (SDK), and several starter projects. These suggestions range from attaching a color e-ink display to the agent to mounting it on a stick that interfaces with the HDMI port of a television.
The project appears to offer considerable flexibility, as users can configure low-cost hobbyist computers like a Raspberry Pi or an off-the-shelf ESP32 board. Meta notes that developers can connect Muse to various peripherals, such as displays, buttons, sensors, actuators, and other components found on their workbenches. Additionally, the company has established a Discord channel to offer technical support to users.
Meta has already tested this concept internally. Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta's Superintelligence Labs, mentioned in a post on X that the team constructed a device called Muse Home Link. This USB-C powered accessory enables Muse to connect to a home network and communicate with smart devices, including speakers and televisions.
Meta manufactured 5,000 of these Home Link units and is distributing them for free to Muse subscribers while current supplies last, according to Friedman. Given that Friedman’s post regarding the Home Link received nearly 30,000 views in a few hours, it is likely that these complimentary items have already been claimed. Friedman stated that shipping for the Home Link would begin a few weeks later.
While Muse Gadgets may not have a broad mass-market appeal, it aligns with Meta’s comprehensive strategy to develop Muse beyond a standalone chatbot. The company is not satisfied with simply promoting Muse to everyday consumers; it is also actively courting small businesses and enterprises. Earlier this week, the company introduced Muse for Small Business, a free offering with usage limits that integrates Muse with tools like Shopify, Dropbox, and Slack. Furthermore, the company launched a new business unit, the Meta Enterprise Platform, to facilitate the promotion of its AI solutions to corporate clients.
