Meta is moving forward with plans to build its own large-scale AI infrastructure, following earlier promises to invest heavily in the technology. On Monday, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch of Meta Compute, a new initiative aimed at expanding the company’s ability to support advanced AI models and products. The announcement builds on capital spending plans shared last year, when Meta said strong internal infrastructure would be key to gaining an edge in AI development.
Zuckerberg said Meta plans to sharply increase its energy usage over the coming years as part of this effort. According to him, the company expects to build tens of gigawatts of power capacity during this decade, with the potential to reach hundreds of gigawatts over time. A gigawatt equals one billion watts of electricity, highlighting the scale of resources required to run modern AI systems. The growing demand for AI is expected to place heavy pressure on power grids, with some estimates suggesting U.S. electricity use for AI could rise many times over in the next ten years.
The Meta Compute initiative will be led by a group of senior executives. Santosh Janardhan, Meta’s head of global infrastructure and a long-time company leader, will oversee technical design, software systems, chip development, and the operation of data centers and networks worldwide. His role covers the core systems needed to support Meta’s AI tools at scale.
Daniel Gross, who joined Meta last year and is known for co-founding Safe Superintelligence with former OpenAI scientist Ilya Sutskever, will lead a new team focused on long-term planning. His group will handle capacity forecasts, supplier relationships, industry research, and financial planning tied to infrastructure growth. In addition, Dina Powell McCormick, Meta’s president and vice chairman and a former government official, will work with public leaders to help build, fund, and deploy infrastructure projects around the world.
Meta’s move comes as competition intensifies among major tech companies to secure AI-ready computing resources. Microsoft has been forming partnerships to expand its cloud capacity, while Google’s parent company, Alphabet, recently acquired a data center firm to strengthen its own infrastructure.
