On Thursday, Meta announced its partnership with Blumhouse Productions, the renowned Hollywood studio behind popular horror films, to test its new generative AI video model, Movie Gen.
The announcement comes after Meta recently launched Movie Gen, a tool that creates realistic video and audio clips from user prompts. Meta believes it can compete with top media startups like OpenAI and ElevenLabs.
Blumhouse has chosen filmmakers Aneesh Chaganty, The Spurlock Sisters, and Casey Affleck to test Movie Gen and include its clips in their short films.
Chaganty’s film will be showcased on Meta’s Movie Gen website. Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum stated that artists are the heart of the industry and that new technology can help tell their stories better.
Speaker: Blum
“We welcomed the chance for some of them to test this cutting-edge technology and give their notes on its pros and cons while it’s still in development. These are going to be powerful tools for directors, and it’s important to engage the creative industry in their development to make sure they’re best suited for the job.”
As AI advances in video editing, Meta isn’t the only player in the AI video generation game. OpenAI has also been engaging with studios about its product, Sora.
Meanwhile, Adobe recently announced its Firefly Video Model, which creates videos from text and images and is launching several beta tools for limited public use.
Additionally, AI research firm Runway continues to innovate with its generative video tools, including its latest release, Gen-3 Alpha, in June. In September, Lionsgate partnered with Runway to develop a new generative AI model using its film and TV library, expanding the possibilities for AI-generated content in Hollywood.
Meta and Blumhouse’s partnership marks a thrilling leap in AI filmmaking, as industry giants explore new creative horizons and reshape storytelling for the future.
