Meta and Apple’s CEOs are publicly endorsing each other’s work on the Muse Spark Open project.

Meta announced the Muse Spark Open AI model today, asserting that it is the “most capable US open-weight model to date.” The company further claims it is the “first model in its class” capable of running on a desktop using two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios and the latest MLX framework.

Typically known as rivals, Meta and Apple have joined forces for this launch and are openly supporting one another.

On X, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated, “Muse Spark Open -- weights releasing today -- runs great on new Mac Studios thanks to work with @johnternus and Apple.”

In a reply, new Apple CEO John Ternus commented, “Congrats to the team! Amazing to run a model of Muse Spark Open’s caliber and scale this efficiently, right from your desk. Mac Studio keeps pushing the boundaries of on-device AI!”

Regarding the recent collaboration, Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang told Axios, “We’re excited for mommy and daddy to be playing nice again,” noting the companies have been collaborating for several months.

The new model is described as a “natively multimodal model” with 816 billion total parameters. It excels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning, according to Meta. Additionally, Apple published a technical post about MLX, an array framework for ML tasks on Apple Silicon, alongside details on Muse Spark Open and two other open models.
