Lovable, the rapidly expanding European vibe coding startup, has informed TechCrunch that its annualized revenue run rate has now exceeded $500 million.

This latest financial update follows the company's announcement in February of crossing the $400 million mark. While Lovable had projected in August 2024 that it could reach $1 billion in annualized revenue within 12 months, and may not achieve that specific target by summer, it continues to demonstrate remarkable growth. Notably, the company, established in late 2023, has not yet reached its three-year anniversary.

The firm also reports a significant milestone, claiming over 50 million projects have been built using its platform, with usage accelerating to one million new projects weekly. A survey of these projects, featured on Lovable's blog, indicates that while its user base is predominantly non-technical, these individuals are increasingly developing software intended for monetization or direct use within their businesses.

Lovable specifies that its users comprise founders, designers, and salespeople, who leverage the platform to create a diverse range of assets, from websites and e-commerce storefronts to essential internal tools such as CRM systems, inventory management platforms, and HR solutions.

This trend underscores a significant shift: AI vibe coding platforms are increasingly perceived as a formidable competitor to traditional SaaS software. The question arises: why commit to expensive annual contracts when the capability exists to "vibe code" solutions in-house? Lovable's survey data suggests this phenomenon is indeed taking hold. However, given Lovable's nascent stage—and consequently, most projects built upon it—it is too early to definitively answer the crucial question of whether such vibe-coded software will prove sustainable in the long term. The primary challenge typically lies not in the initial development but in ongoing maintenance.

Software, akin to a living organism, requires constant attention. Even meticulously crafted code, free from AI-generated inefficiencies, operates within a dynamic ecosystem of dependencies, third-party services, and infrastructure that is perpetually updated. This constant evolution invariably leads to software breaking. This inherent complexity is precisely why many organizations opt to purchase commercial software rather than build it themselves, entrusting the burden of continuous maintenance to vendors. A true measure of the "SaaSpocalypse" — the potential displacement of traditional SaaS — will come as Lovable and similar vibe coding platforms mature and transparently report on abandoned projects, revealing the less glamorous aspects of their ecosystem. Low abandonment rates would be the strongest indicator that this paradigm shift is not only present but here to endure.
