If you are seeking a document editor that explicitly avoids artificial intelligence, LibreOffice may be the ideal software choice for you.

The Document Foundation, the nonprofit developer of the open-source LibreOffice editor, stated in a recent blog post that while they do not rule out AI entirely, they will not incorporate it into the software in the foreseeable future.

This announcement comes shortly after the release of the latest version in late August, where the nonprofit reiterated that the software "contains no generative AI features."

LibreOffice clarified that this decision is a "deliberate design position." This ensures that user documents remain on the device and that the software functions without a network connection, prioritizing data control for tens of millions of users and organizations.

"Any organization handling confidential, legally privileged, or personal data needs to know where that data goes," the organization noted. "The only assurance that survives an audit is that it does not leave the machine."

LibreOffice allows users to enhance the editor with AI capabilities by installing extensions that connect to local AI models, but these are optional additions, not default features.

This move challenges the current trend among software makers who often pack applications with excessive AI features, a phenomenon often referred to as "enshittification" that can degrade the user experience.

AI tools typically require the upload and processing of user data on remote servers, which users cannot control regarding storage or retention. LibreOffice stated that no current integration satisfies their requirement for data to remain on the device without depending on a single provider.

The organization described their non-inclusion as an assessment of the current technology rather than a definitive rejection of the AI sector.

"Until then, there will be no AI of any kind in the default installation; extensions will be available for those who wish to integrate AI features, and we will closely monitor where the technology is actually heading," the blog post concluded.

LibreOffice serves as a significant alternative for open-source users looking to escape the dominance of major Silicon Valley technology companies.
