At MWC, Lenovo unveiled two innovative AI-powered productivity companion concepts, presented alongside new laptop prototypes and existing products. These standalone desk devices are engineered to enhance workplace efficiency while offering a unique form of artificial companionship to office professionals.
The AI Workmate Concept, described by Lenovo as an “always-on desk companion,” presents itself as a compact robotic arm mounted on a swiveling base, culminating in a spherical screen that displays expressive eyes. While perhaps not replicating human interaction, its local AI processing enables users to engage with it as a smart assistant through both voice commands and physical gestures.
This Workmate Concept extends its utility to “practical business tasks.” Equipped with a camera positioned beneath its screen, it can scan notes and documents, facilitating the generation of summaries, organization of ideas, or automatic conversion into presentations. For collaborative sharing, the device integrates a projector capable of displaying content directly onto a desk surface or a nearby wall.
Taking an alternative approach to AI assistance, Lenovo's AI Work Companion Concept resembles a bedside alarm clock with a prominent screen. Rather than acting as an alarm, it utilizes AI to “sync tasks and schedules from across the user’s devices to generate a balanced daily plan.” To actively combat burnout, the Work Companion monitors screen time, recommends regular breaks, offers playful interactions via animated faces, and concludes the week with celebrations detailing completed tasks.
Furthermore, this device functions as a versatile docking station, enabling a laptop connection to multiple external displays via HDMI and offering numerous USB ports for charging other peripherals, thereby contributing to a more organized workspace.
Lenovo possesses a strong history of transforming conceptual devices into commercially available products, exemplified by last year's launch of the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 featuring an extending rollable screen. However, the company has not yet confirmed whether either of these newly unveiled AI concepts will transition into production.
