Cloud infrastructure provider Lambda is securing up to $4 billion at a $14.5 billion pre-money valuation. This round, led by Coatue Management and Blackstone, could represent the company's final private funding before its planned initial public offering in 2027, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
An investor letter reviewed by The Wall Street Journal indicates that Lambda’s backlog has surged from $15 billion in June to $50 billion in September.
Although this surge suggests strong market demand, a significant portion of the increase—specifically $35 billion—can be attributed to a single major client: Anthropic. The AI lab signed a deal with Lambda in late August.
Consequently, Lambda’s valuation, which has risen dramatically since its 2025 funding round, may depend heavily on Anthropic's continued financial stability.
Nonetheless, investors remain willing to back providers of scarce reliable GPU capacity, particularly those holding major contracts with leading AI laboratories.
For neoclouds such as Lambda, the primary challenge is not demand, but the cost of fulfillment. Data center expansions are largely financed by debt, and lenders are becoming increasingly selective regarding who receives capital and under what terms. Lambda recently secured an additional $1 billion to bolster its position.
Raising capital now serves a dual purpose: it sets the stage for valuation expectations ahead of the IPO and provides the company with leverage before entering the scrutiny of public markets.
If and when Lambda proceeds with its IPO—originally scheduled for this year but postponed due to market uncertainty—it will join a growing group of Nvidia-backed neoclouds, such as CoreWeave and Nebius, which rely on stock performance to finance their infrastructure projects.
British neocloud Nscale filed for an IPO last month and is anticipated to begin trading in the near future.
Representatives for Lambda, Coatue, and Blackstone did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
