A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction, preventing Perplexity's AI agents from placing orders on Amazon's platform for users. This development, initially reported by Bloomberg, stems from a Monday ruling by US District Judge Maxine Chesney, who noted that Amazon presented "strong evidence" that Perplexity's Comet browser accessed user accounts "without authorization" from the e-commerce giant.

Amazon initiated legal action against Perplexity in November, claiming it had "repeatedly requested" the AI startup to cease allowing its agents to make purchases for customers. The retail behemoth further asserted that Perplexity was "intruding" into its marketplace and user accounts through Comet's agentic shopping feature, thereby violating computer fraud and abuse statutes. Additionally, Amazon alleged Perplexity attempted to "conceal" its agentic operations by "misrepresenting the Comet browser as Google Chrome."

The preliminary injunction mandates that Perplexity refrain from accessing Amazon via its AI agents and compels the destruction of any Amazon data it may have acquired. This injunction is set to become effective in seven days, providing Perplexity an opportunity to file an appeal.

Commenting to Bloomberg, Amazon spokesperson Lara Hendrickson stated that the ruling "will prevent Perplexity’s unauthorized access to the Amazon store," emphasizing the company's intent to "continue to make our case in court." Conversely, Perplexity spokesperson Jesse Dwyer informed The Verge that the startup "will continue to fight for the right of internet users to choose whatever AI they want."
