Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and Block, recently unveiled a new application named Buzz on Tuesday. Positioned as a significant contender in the enterprise communication space, Buzz is designed as a group chat platform for the workplace, uniquely integrating human collaboration with AI agents within the same conversations.
Dorsey articulated Buzz's core philosophy on X, describing it as “model-agnostic, decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source.” This initiative appears to transcend a mere personal project, as its official website confirms Buzz was developed by Dorsey’s company, Block, known for its portfolio of products including Square, Cash App, Afterpay, and Tidal.
In today's evolving work landscape, startups are increasingly leveraging AI agents, which can complicate inter-employee collaboration across diverse platforms. Buzz addresses this challenge by consolidating various workflows into a single workspace. While visually resembling Slack, Buzz distinguishes itself through its native AI agent integration and the capability to manage GitHub projects directly from its interface, aiming to reduce dependency on existing tools.
Its open-source nature empowers developers to tailor their Buzz instances to precisely match their team's specific needs and workflows. Should a team require a new feature, they possess the autonomy to build and deploy it independently, thanks to full access to the platform's source code.
Dorsey is not alone in exploring AI-native alternatives or enhancements to established platforms like Slack. Georgios Konstantopoulos, partner and CTO at Paradigm, recently introduced Centaur, a similar open-source offering. Konstantopoulos characterizes Centaur as a “virtual employee” capable of operating either within Slack or via an API.
Konstantopoulos further elaborated on his vision via X, stating, “There’s a lot of room for improvement for agents that live in Slack and can do more work than just coding for teams. In the enterprise setting, this means that you’ll want to self-host for security and control, and you want people to use it in Slack.” He also championed Centaur, claiming it could "100x your team's productivity."
For newer startups already utilizing AI agents and lacking an entrenched presence on Slack, Buzz—or its emerging competitors—warrants consideration. However, Buzz itself acknowledges its "early stages" of development, suggesting that a complete team migration might be premature at this juncture.
Buzz’s free desktop application is currently available across macOS, Windows, and Linux, with its complete source code having been uploaded to GitHub.
