Following the disclosure of over a thousand emails, slides, texts, and documents during the United States v. Elizabeth Holmes trial, Extend engineer Bo Lau developed a website to simulate the experience of being the Theranos CEO prior to its collapse.
(I am grateful to the American legal system each day for making the discovery process public.)
I built a website where you can sit at Elizabeth Holmes' desk, open her MacBook, scroll through her iPhone, and run the Theranos Edison machine. Her texts, emails, slides, documents, and machine records are authentic, sourced from exhibits in the United States v. Holmes criminal trial.
The environment Lau created is ambitiously detailed, transporting users back to 2016, a period when iPhones featured home buttons and required a fingerprint slide to unlock. Even the MacBook Air is running the OS X El Capitan operating system.
Users can interact with the environment by clicking through the documents released during the court case displayed on Holmes' iPhone and laptop screens. Additionally, visitors can operate the Theranos Edison machine, the ill-fated device intended to extract vast amounts of health data from a single drop of blood.
While the project appears intended primarily for humor, it serves as an engaging method to explore documents from one of the most infamous court cases in tech history. It offers a more intuitive experience than sifting through thousands of PDFs available on court websites.
However, there is another objective. Lau is promoting a watch party hosted by her company for Nathan Fielder's upcoming documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, titled "You Can See Everything."
Naturally, the company is also promoting itself. So, what does Extend actually do? Apparently, it can "parse, extract, and split your hardest documents with unmatched accuracy." (While I am unsure of the specifics, if this technology enables the creation of a simulator like this Holmes desk, then I am optimistic about B2B SaaS.)
