As Intel continues its strategic efforts toward revitalization, the company's CEO has committed to initiating production of a novel chip type, one that has achieved considerable prominence thanks to rival Nvidia.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan formally announced the company's intention to begin manufacturing Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) during the Cisco AI Summit on Tuesday. Unlike the Central Processing Units (CPUs) Intel traditionally produces, GPUs are specialized processors critical for applications such as high-performance gaming and the intensive training of artificial intelligence models.

TechCrunch subsequently contacted Intel for additional information regarding this announcement.

This significant project will be overseen by Kevork Kechichian, the Executive Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s data center group, according to reporting from Reuters. Kechichian was appointed in September as part of a series of new hires strategically focused on bolstering the company's engineering capabilities.

Further reinforcing this initiative, Intel also brought Eric Demmers on board in January. Demmers previously contributed over 13 years of service at Qualcomm, where he most recently held the position of Senior Vice President of Engineering.

The endeavor appears to be in its relatively early stages, as Tan indicated that the company plans to refine its strategy based on evolving customer demands and specific market needs.

While Nvidia did not invent the GPU, this particular chip architecture has been profoundly instrumental in its commercial success. Nvidia's GPUs for AI systems are renowned for their advanced capabilities and widespread adoption, granting the chipmaker a commanding leadership position in the market.

Intel's expansion into this sector is particularly noteworthy, considering Tan's previous statement upon assuming the CEO role last March, where he emphasized consolidating and focusing on the company's core businesses. Although GPUs are fundamentally semiconductors, this move unequivocally represents a significant strategic diversification.
