Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has expressed his position against completely filtering out AI-generated content from the platform. While he acknowledges that users who dislike AI content "shouldn’t have it in your feed," Mosseri, during an interview on Lenny Rachitsky’s podcast, stated, "I don’t think we should filter out AI content." Instead, he advocates for transparency, proposing, "I think we should let you know if content is AI content or not."

Mosseri appears to draw a clear distinction between content-based sorting and a full ban on AI from the platform. He believes that enthusiasts of AI content "should be able to have a feed that’s just AI town." Currently, Instagram, much like other major platforms including TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook, readily labels AI-generated content, yet it does not offer users an option to filter this content out of their personal feeds.

Detecting AI content is a significant challenge, as Mosseri conceded, noting that Instagram might "lose the ability" to identify AI posts as models become more sophisticated. He suggested an interactive approach, stating, "I think you should be able to just ask, “Is this AI?,” and we should be able to tell you we think it probably is, or we’re not sure, or it’s definitely not, or definitely isn’t." Mosseri also pondered whether it might be "more practical" to label non-AI-generated "camera-captured content" instead, a sentiment he previously shared in December 2025 regarding the "fingerprinting" of "real media."

Despite Mosseri's acknowledgement that Instagram needs to "figure out how to crack down" on spammy AI content, the platform continues to integrate and embrace the technology. A notable example is the launch of Meta’s AI image generator, Muse Spark, which enables Instagram users to include and tag other users in their AI creations. This feature has raised serious concerns from Haley McNamara, executive director of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, who warned that it "creates obvious and foreseeable opportunities for exploitation, sexual abuse, harassment, and identity fraud."
