Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, remarked that apprehensions regarding artificial intelligence essentially boil down to a fear of falling behind in some aspect.
During an interview on the *Colin and Samir* podcast to discuss the launch of widescreen and long-form video features, Mosseri addressed the trend of college students booing tech CEOs at graduation ceremonies. He acknowledged that significant numbers of people dislike AI, noting that this sentiment extends beyond just young people and creative professionals. Mosseri observed a rising trend of "more anxiety and more frustration and more anger about AI," especially within the creative industries.
"It’s not only getting worse, it’s going to continue to get worse," Mosseri asserted. He predicted that over the next couple of years, the world would see "more frustration and anger, some of it founded, some of it unfounded," which would make life difficult for many people, not just those in the industry.
Regarding content ranking, Mosseri claimed that Instagram does not prioritize AI creators differently. However, he questioned whether quality is being maintained, stating, "There’s a lot of great AI content out there, there’s also a lot of AI slop. Do we rank AI content as well as we rank non-AI content? Probably not." He noted that the term "AI slop" is often used too liberally.
Instagram began cracking down on AI-generated profiles in August, having previously introduced labels for AI accounts. Despite these measures, misleading content like celebrity deepfakes remains a problem. Mosseri mentioned earlier this month that Instagram is "actively working out what to do" about AI fakes but clarified, "I don’t think it’s practical for us to try and ban AI content from the platform."
Mosseri explained that Instagram is now requiring AI accounts to self-identify, emphasizing the importance of transparency. He recognized that various fears surround AI, including those held by creators regarding content ownership, the training of models on their data, and safety concerns. He also touched upon job displacement for engineers and mathematicians, concluding that the core issue often comes down to "a fear of being left behind in some way."
