MoEngage, an Indian customer engagement software provider, has completed an all-cash acquisition of San Francisco-based startup Aampe. This strategic move underscores MoEngage's conviction that AI agents capable of making autonomous decisions for individual customers represent the future trajectory of marketing.

While MoEngage chose not to disclose the precise financial terms of the transaction, a source with direct knowledge of the matter informed TechCrunch that the all-cash deal was valued in the tens of millions of dollars.

Established in 2020, Aampe specializes in developing software that assigns a dedicated AI agent to each customer. This innovative approach empowers brands to deliver highly personalized messaging tailored to individual behavior, moving beyond traditional audience segmentation and predefined campaign rules. MoEngage co-founder and Chief Executive Raviteja Dodda noted in an interview that Aampe serves over 30 customers spanning the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific, and achieved an impressive 150% growth in annual recurring revenue over the past year.

Dodda conveyed to TechCrunch that this acquisition is expected to significantly bolster MoEngage's ability to attract customers currently utilizing rival marketing platforms, including industry giants like Salesforce and Adobe.

“A large part of our growth is driven by migrations of enterprise customers from Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Adobe Experience Cloud,” Dodda stated.

Recently, MoEngage secured three to four multi-million-dollar annual contract value deals with enterprises that transitioned from Salesforce, according to Dodda. He expressed optimism that the integration of Aampe will further accelerate the acquisition of such high-value customers.

This acquisition unfolds amidst a broader industry trend where software companies are intensely focused on integrating advanced AI capabilities deeper into enterprise applications. The shift is moving beyond AI tools that merely generate content or assist employees, towards agents that make autonomous decisions. In the realm of marketing, this encompasses AI-driven choices regarding customer targeting, message content, and optimal delivery times.

Aampe's cutting-edge technology is currently deployed by prominent brands such as Swiggy, Grab, and Taxfix, some of whom are also existing users of MoEngage’s customer engagement platform, highlighting a natural synergy.

The acquisition materializes just over six months after MoEngage successfully raised $280 million through a combination of primary and secondary transactions. Approximately 20 employees from Aampe will join MoEngage, expanding the company's total workforce to roughly 820 individuals.

Since its inception in 2020, Aampe has accumulated approximately $28 million across three funding rounds. Its notable investors include Peak XV Partners, Z47, and Theory Ventures.
