Impulse Space, the innovative startup founded by SpaceX engine architect Tom Mueller, specializing in highly-maneuverable spacecraft, has successfully concluded a Series D funding round, securing an impressive $500 million. This significant capital injection is earmarked for ambitious expansion, including the recruitment of up to 200 new employees.
The funding round was spearheaded by 137 Ventures and BANNER VC, with additional crucial contributions from Founders Fund, Lux Capital, and Linse Capital. This substantial investment underscores a burgeoning investor confidence in the space and defense technology sectors, driven by increased U.S. government spending on national security initiatives and the anticipated initial public offering of SpaceX.
At its core, Impulse Space is dedicated to advancing in-space mobility. The company has engineered Mira, a highly agile platform specifically designed to meet the demands of U.S. Space Force buyers. Furthermore, Impulse is developing Helios, a cutting-edge vehicle conceived to rapidly transport satellites to higher orbits after they have been deployed at lower altitudes.
In an interview with TechCrunch, Eric Romo, President and COO of Impulse Space, affirmed that the new capital will significantly bolster the company's efforts to build and rigorously test a greater number of space vehicles. He particularly highlighted the strategic importance of their hiring initiatives during a period marked by intense competition for skilled aerospace talent.
While Impulse Space’s software development teams are embracing AI coding tools, Romo expressed reservations about the current readiness of deep learning models for solving complex real-world engineering challenges. Drawing on his extensive experience as the 13th employee at SpaceX in 2003, where he developed computer simulations to evaluate engine design performance, Romo offers a unique perspective.
“I considered it success if I got within 20% of the right answer, because the simulations were just not that good,” Romo recalled. He added, “They’ve improved, but they’ve not improved that much, and so there’s not really any substitute for designing the thing, analyzing the thing, building it, and then getting it on the test stand.”
Romo posits that the integration of AI tools for hardware design might progress more slowly due to the scarcity of relevant training data, a stark contrast to the vast quantities of text and code available for training large language models. He illustrated this point by stating, “If you want to go, say, find the best designs for a turbo pump seal package in the world, you’re not going to find those online.”
Impulse Space initially concentrated on propulsion systems before broadening its scope to encompass full spacecraft development. This evolution necessitated expanding its engineering expertise to include specialists in vehicle structures and flight computers. The company's recent decision to establish an office in Colorado reflects a strategic response to the evolving aerospace talent landscape, where engineers now have diverse options beyond traditional hubs like Los Angeles, including Seattle, Denver, or Texas.
Looking ahead, Impulse Space is preparing for another launch of its Mira spacecraft. The vehicle's third flight late last year encountered an incident involving its navigation system, which led to an early depletion of propellant. Despite this, Romo confirmed that the company is diligently preparing a new Mira mission, projected to launch before the end of the current year.
